Coaches Corner 6/10/2011

Happy Friday MacDolphins!

First off, I want to say what an amazing job all of the swimmers did on Tuesday night at Time Trials.  They have worked so hard these past couple of weeks and it was great to see all of their effort pay off in the water.  I hope they had fun- I know the coaches did while watching them swim.

That being said, we still have some progress to make.  This week we will be focusing mostly on perfecting backstroke and butterfly technique.  The 6 & Unders will be working on diving and breastroke.  More importantly I saw a lot of swimmers following through on the sportsmanship techniques I asked them to use.  It would be great if you could help me encourage your child to wait in the water for every swimmer in their heat to finish and also to cheer for their teammates.  I feel like these two things can make a swim meet more enjoyable for every swimmer.  Also, if your child isn’t swimming, please SCRATCH your child from a meet BEFORE MONDAY AFTERNOON PRACTICE . It is very difficult for the heat sheets to be made correctly if swimmers do not scratch and no shows throw the whole meet off.

Next week we start morning practices and I encourage you to take advantage of them.  On Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays we are adding clinics to better help your child with turns, starts and their strokes.  We will also have normal practice on Tuesdays and Fridays.  These practices are usually less crowded and as such, are great opportunities to improve.  The full schedule can be viewed on the website.

We have our first home meet against the Apex Breakers this coming Tuesday which should be a lot of fun.  Please have your swimmer at the pool around 4:30 pm so we can start warm-ups on time.  Please have your swimmer check in and get numbered at the entrance to the pool. After the meet the coaches will be heading to Goodberry’s to celebrate the first meet of the season and we would love to have any swimmer that can join us.  Goodberry’s is a great refresher after a long swim meet!

Usually, on the Monday before a home meet, the 13&Ups have a pump-up pasta dinner.  We currently do not a volunteer to host this event, so if anyone would be interested in doing this please contact one of the event coordinators (Elena Oddo and Leslie Epstein).  Their contact information is on the home page on the website
